Butte County Board of Education Appoints Final Trustees

The Butte County Board of Education swears in its newest board member, Alastair Roughton.

OROVILLE — The Butte County Board of Education swore in Alastair Roughton as the trustee for At-Large Area 2 (Oroville) on Monday, Feb. 10, filling the final 2024 vacancy for the board.

Roughton joins appointee Evan Tuchinsky (Area 1; Chico) as the second board member to join after the Butte County Committee on School District Organization approved new Trustee Area boundaries in April 2024. Those boundaries took effect Nov. 5, 2024. Roughton previously served on the board from 2019 to 2020.

The Board of Education now comprises these trustees, with their trustee areas and term expiries, respectively:

Tuchinsky, Area 1 (Chico), 2028

Amy Christianson, Area 2 (Chico), 2028

Area 3 (Chico) – to be elected in 2026

Daniel Alexander, Area 4 (Chico), 2028

Julian Diaz, Area 5 (Durham/Oroville), 2028

Area 7 (Paradise) – to be elected in 2026

Mike Walsh, At-Large Area 2 (Oroville), 2026

Roughton, At-Large Area 2 (Oroville), 2026

Emily Holtom, At-Large Area 3 (Paradise), 2026

New Board of Education Roles

The Butte County Board of Education, in partnership with the County Superintendent of Schools, provides leadership, service, and support to 13 local school districts, 15 charter schools, and all students in Butte County.

Trustees are elected in even-numbered years and serve four-year terms. Each December, the board elects a president and vice president from among its members. The Butte County Superintendent of Schools serves as the board secretary.

In December, the board appointed Alexander (Area 4; Chico) as president and Holtom (At-Large Area 3; Paradise) as vice president. Alexander previously served as vice president under past president Diaz, whom voters elected as the trustee for Area 5 (Durham/Oroville).

First Student Board Member

In January, the Board of Education swore in the county’s first student board member, Aurora Loomis, a student at Hearthstone Charter School in Oroville.

Recognition of Service

The Butte County Office of Education and the Board of Education would like to recognize the significant contributions of two board members after years of service. Brenda McLaughlin and Karin Matray both completed their most recent terms in November. McLaughlin leaves as the board’s longest-tenured member, having served for 44 years. Matray joined the board in 2019.
